New south Fulton County dog park opens

Sammy, of Batavia Street, and other  four-legged residents of the neighborhood have a new playground to romp in.

A five-acre dog park, called Canine Crossing, opened on the weekend. The park includes two fenced play areas: one for dogs less than 20 pounds and the other dogs heavier than 20 pounds. 
There are also concrete tunnels, fire hydrants and water fountains reserved for dogs. Amenities for people include two covered pavilions, a walking area, benches, and restrooms.

Canine Crossing is 10 miles from Jefferson Park, on the far side of College Park.

Fulton County Announces the Grand Opening of the “Canine Crossing”
Fulton County Vice Chairman William “Bill” Edwards will host the grand opening of South Fulton County’s first dog park on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 10 a.m.  Dogs and dog owners in South Fulton will have a new place to play thanks to Canine Crossing Dog Park.

Canine Crossing covers more than five acres and features two fenced dog play areas; one for dogs less than 20 pounds and one for dogs more than 20 pounds. The park also offers concrete tunnels, fire hydrants and water fountains for all dogs. For people, amenities include two covered pavilions, a walking area, benches, and restrooms.

Vice-Chairman Edwards said of the dog park, “Canine Crossing provides a new recreational opportunity for the dog owners and residents of South Fulton County. The park was designed and built solely by Fulton County employees which shows the County’s commitment to the innovative use of resources in serving South Fulton residents.”

The address of Canine Crossing is 4951 Camp Drive.  It is located between the South Fulton Government Service Center (5600 Stonewall Tell Road, College Park) and the South Fulton Tennis Center (5645 Mason Road, College Park).  Parking is available at the South Fulton Government Service Center.

Diary of the day, Tour of Homes

O.K., this weekend is the annual tour of homes. Our neighborhood will shine as we get to traipse through the beautiful homes we admire.

Here's the drill, "The JP Hub" wants to post photos about the event. Only pictures taken on Saturday, Oct. 10 in and around Jefferson Park. 

Think of it as a diary of the day. We want pictures of people at the food tent, ticket sellers, tour guides with smiles, snapshots of pretty homes and pretty people.

Please send your pictures to to jeffersonparkhub@gmail.com.  In the body of the e-mail, include the time and place of the photo was taken, as well as any details — photographer's name, for credit, ID of people in the photo, small details about the scene, etc.

We'll take all photos, from cell phones to point and shoot. Let's show off those camera skills!

Make weekend plans

If you are wondering how to spend your valuable weekend time, consider some of these activities:

Friday:

Tri-Cities High School football, 7:30 p.m., at home. Fee.

Saturday: 

Clean up neighborhood stone markers. 

Meet at 8 a.m., at the marker at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Winburn Drive. Free.

Destination Downtown festival

Noon to 7 p.m. in downtown East Point. Free.

Sunday: 

Beginner Program at the Dick Lane Velodrome

The successful beginner program for basic track skills and velodrome etiquette returns. It begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Fee is $60 and it includes bike rental.

Downtown East Point is the place to be

With games, vendors selling crafts, and bragging rights in the chili cook off as a prize, the Destination Downtown celebration Saturday will be lively.

Four bands - playing everything from Latin rhythms to jazz - will give the party a spark.

Streets will be closed to give folks an opporunity to stroll the heart of the community, support the new stores and restaurants and visit with neigbhors. Last year, an estimated 5,000 people came out.

Weather on Saturday is supposed to be sunny and in the 70s.

The fall tradition is sponsored by a variety of local establishments, who come together as the East Point Main Street Association, a group focused on enhancing the central business district of downtown East Point.

The festival opens at noon. The schedule of events: 

• Noon - 1:00 pm - Water Seed (Rhythm & Blues)
• 1 pm - Free Face Painting (til around 4:00 pm)
• 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. - Guru Fish (Light Rock Band
• 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. - Alicia Y. Rumba Brava (Latin Band)
• 5 p.m. - 6 p.m. - Dog/Puppy Show begins in grassy area of the "Commons"
• 5 p.m.  - 7 p.m. - Ron James and the Truth (Jazz Band)
• 7:30 pm - Kid's Zone & Silent Auction Closes
• 8 pm - Closing remarks and announcement of contest winners

Help out in the communtiy

October is a busy month here in Jefferson Park.

This fall's big event is on Columbus Day weekend, October 10 & 11, which is the 7th Annual JP Tour of Homes when homes and gardens are showcased.

And in time for the neighborhood's big Tour of Homes, volunteers are needed to spruce up the entry ways to the neighborhood and around the place.

A work crew on Saturday, Oct. 3, will be cleaning up and planting flowers around the Jefferson Park's brick markers. The work will be easier with a few people who can lend a hand for a few hours next Saturday morning.  The work begins at 8 a.m.

The following weekend is the  JP Tour of Homes. Volunteers are needed for ticket sales, home duties, and other tasks.

Here's what is needed on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11:

• people to work three-hour shifts, from 11am - 2 pm & 2 pm - 5:15 pm  
• Volunteer for one or both days at a shift that works best! If you can only work the entire shift, this is ok.   

For your troubles, you get a ticket to the after party to mix it up with all the JP Tour members, homeowners and other volunteers.

The good people at Truly Living Well Natural Urban Farms, on Washington Road, are trying to get in a Saturday class for would-be gardeners as Mother Nature's deluge of rain. 

Meanwhile, if you have some time this afternoon, Lovin' It Live, a  live food establishment in downtown East Point, will be at the farm at 3353 Washington Rd., East Point. Cooks will show people how to prepare dishes from the seasonal crops. 

This Saturday, the class on natural and organic urban agricultural methods will try again. Rain canceled the last two attempts . This focuses on fall planting and covers everything from soil preparation and composting to crop management to insect control.

It is a get-your-hands-dirty type of experience conducted at the East Point farm. 

Folks leave not only with new knowledge, but some fall seeds to plant.

2009 JPNA Field Day

A week away before the neighborhood's first field day competition. Still time to put together a team. The fun time is to raise money for those small metal signs posted atop street signs that say this is Jefferson Park.

JPNA announcement:

Come and participate in Jefferson Park’s 2009 Field Day on Saturday, September 12 at Sumner Park, starting at 11:00! The day will include a kickball tournament, a relay race, cornhole, and several more activities fun for all ages, as well as concessions. The tickets to participate will be $5 for adults and $3 for children, with discounts for teams, or just come and watch for free.
Interested in participating? Think your neighborhood could field a team? Just want to stop by and watch a bunch of grownups get maimed playing kickball? Main Street Runners hit the street

Braving summer's heat, runners Thursday laced up for the first jog of the Main Street Runners.

The fleet of foot waved hello to seniors enjoying the warm summer evening on their porch, passed dogs and owners out for a walk and boys and girls simply playing.

The runners came with a variety of experience, from veteran marathoners to an ex-smoker looking to get in better shape.

This week, the group completed a 3.18- mile course through the Frog Hollow and Conley Hills neighborhoods.

The new running group of plans to meet weekly either at Main Street's Oz Pizza or another local mainstay and hit the streets. The running routes will expand to include College Park.

Next running is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, 7 p.m. The location remains up in the air. A Facebook page is in the works. Also, the Hub will post the next running location.

A brief roundup of news from the August meeting:

• Here's a lesson in calling the East Point police: do it. No matter how small the issue. As one resident put, "I have them on speed dial." A topic that grabbed the attention of the 20 or so residents was a Pegg Road homeowner's story of dealing with what she called troublesome neighbors making life difficult with dogs and other general problems. A "complete nightmare" is how she actually put it. One step toward resolving the issues is calling the East Point Police Department and making officers aware of what is going on. The non-emergency phone number is 404.761.2177.
• The neighborhood association is hosting a friendly field day competition. Some 40 people have signed up for this fundraiser. Set aside Sept. 12, starting at 11 a.m. for fun and games. Prizes include gift certificates to area restaurants.

The next mixer for Jefferson Park is Saturday, 4 p.m., at the Brake Pad eatery in nearby College Park. Come out to mix and mingle with neighbors.
